Medical Flight Transfers After Strokes

Angel MedFlight helps patients get to the stroke centers of excellence they need to heal - and helps families with ensuring insurance coverage

When a stroke occurs, every moment counts—not just in the initial emergency response, but also in getting your loved one to the specialized rehabilitation care they need to maximize recovery. The transition from acute hospital care to a dedicated stroke rehabilitation center of excellence is a critical step that often requires medical flight transportation to ensure continuity of care and access to the best possible treatment options.

We understand that navigating medical flight transfers during such a challenging time can feel overwhelming. That's why we're here to walk you through exactly what you need to know, step by step, so you can focus on what matters most—your loved one's recovery.

Our team of compassionate in-flight medical experts have extensive medical training and also have additional training on the particular details of treating patients while flying. Patients who have had recent strokes regularly require additional help from our medical team, including help with physical stabilization, providing continuous neurologic assessments, monitoring and assisting with oxygenation, monitoring and assisting with blood pressure control, and helping with strategies to prevent further brain injury. Our experienced medical teams have the knowledge and care to help your loved one transition safely to the next place to help them heal.

How Much Do Medical Flights After Stroke Cost? Are they Covered by Insurance?

Each medical flight is unique, with each starting and ending in different locations, as well as each person needing different levels of care. Because of this, each flight is individually quoted - so give us a call today to understand the likely cost for your medical flight.

Medical flight transfers for stroke patients are often covered by insurance when deemed medically necessary. We handle the entire insurance authorization process, working directly with your insurance provider to minimize out-of-pocket expenses and ensure proper coverage.

What We Handle for You with Insurance

Insurance verification and pre-authorization, direct billing to insurance providers, coordination with case managers, and detailed documentation of medical necessity. Our experienced team has worked with thousands of insurance cases and understands the specific requirements for stroke patient transports.

How Do You Know if You Have Insurance Coverage for a Medical Flight after a Stroke?

Insurance companies typically approve medical flight transfers for stroke patients when the receiving facility offers services not available at the current location, when the patient's condition requires specialized transport capabilities, or when the distance and time factors make ground transportation inappropriate for the patient's medical needs.

The whole team at Angel MedFlight was unbelievable. It started with Veronica! Extremely informative and she answered all my questions. She gave me information and advice about the insurance process. She also told me about things I would not have even known about. She showed how much she cares about the patients and family. Candace Greg, and Monica were also great too.As far as the flight crew. The pilots Brian and Zac(I believe) were amazing. They made us feel safe and got us smoothly and quickly back.Deven and Jay were all-stars. How Jay treated my wife and worked with my mother-in-law to make sure my wife was comfortable was amazing. Deven kept me calm and at ease while monitoring my wife’s vitals. They both stayed with us and helped carry bags. We had a few heavy ones. They both also made sure we had transportation to and from the airports. This is a well ran organization. Thanks again!!

Greg- Flight Coordinator was wonderful and helped the flight happen. The on-flight team was amazing. My mom raved about the treatment of the entire medical team who had to act in mid air due to my Dad's health. They stayed at our house for some time, as well, until my father's heart rate could stabilize...Thank you so much for bring my Dad his final last wish. He passed at home in Chicago 6 days later (Friday morning). We got him home just in time.

I cannot say enough about how grateful we are for the Angel Medflight team. Our mother was hospitalized in CT for 8 weeks and just wanted to go home in lieu of a rehab center. Angel MedFlight made that happen. They were responsive, informative, on-time, compassionate, helpful and provided exceptional medical care to our mother during a time that was filled with anxiety. Thank you to the fantastic team, especially Timothy and Jhonattan that accompanied her on the flight. Thank you so very much. Alison and Nancy

We are beyond grateful to Angel MedFlight for safely transporting our son, Kaha, from Arizona to Texas during one of the most critical moments of his medical journey. From start to finish, their team was compassionate, professional, and incredibly reassuring. They handled everything with care, kept us informed every step of the way, and treated our son with dignity and respect. In a season filled with fear and uncertainty, Angel MedFlight gave us peace of mind. We truly couldn’t have asked for a better team and will forever be thankful for the role they played in Kaha’s journey.

I really am speechless. AngelMed handled everything, and with such grace, compassion and urgency. I called them on a Tuesday. By Thursday my father was in the air. He was picked up at a hospital in Philadelphia at 11AM. By 4PM his head was on his own pillow in Palm Beach. Bedside to bedside service with a smile during a very difficult time in our lives. I cannot recommend this company enough!

Can Family Members fly with a Stroke Patient being Transferred?

We can arrange for family members to accompany patients when medically appropriate and space permits. Except in very extenuating circumstances, one family member is normally able to travel onboard the medical flight with the patient.
