Director of Clinical Education / Chief Flight Nurse

Position Responsibilities:

As the Director of Clinical Education "DOCE" at AMF, an individual shall be responsible directly to the Medical Director and Director of Operations for all clinical care activities and coordination. This person shall retain a proactive standing within the organization to ensure all clinical personnel are proficient, trained, executing first-class clinical decisions acceptable within the healthcare community, all personnel are receiving quality assurance and quality improvement standards that contribute to the development of each individual and the organization, and this individual will consult with each flight coordinator and medical director prior to engaging those medical crew members into a mission. Further, the DOCE position will be responsible for recruiting, employing, and staffing each aircraft with appropriate medical personnel.   As the primary responsibility, the DOCE will develop, maintain, implement, and coordinate the following minimum CAMTS educational requirements into initial and re-current training for all clinical staff. Complementing AMF's existence as the leading Air Medical Transportation Company throughout the world, the DOCE shall be responsible for obtaining, executing, and ongoing development of the “Training Program Certification” from the Arizona Department of Health Services, Division of Public Health Services Bureau of Emergency Medical Services & Trauma Systems. The following are minimum level courses that should be expected for services offered to the public community:

  • Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) / Basic Life Support (BLS) Courses
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) Courses
  • Pediatric Life Support Courses (PALS) Courses
  • Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) or Transport Nurse Advanced Trauma Course (TNATC) Courses
  • Basic Trauma Life Support (BTLS), Pre-Hospital Trauma Life Support (PHTLS), & International Trauma Life Support (ITLS) Courses
  • Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) Courses
  • Arizona EMT – Basic Courses
  • Arizona EMT – Intermediate Courses
  • Arizona EMT – Paramedic Courses
  • Arizona ALS Refresher Courses

As an ongoing measure of Quality Assurance "QA" and Quality Improvement "QI" programs within the organization, the DOCE will ensure that regular reviews are performed on pre-, in-, and post-flight records. This individual will work with the current QA and QI programs that are currently within the organization and build upon these tools with the Software Engineer. As an overall result, the DOCE should be looking to ensure the progress of more efficient and resilient methods of examination and verification of all clinical personnel activity.

In some instances it may not be clinically appropriate to burden the Medical Directors with enquiries surrounding the pre-flight arrangements with those AMF Flight Coordinators. These instances involve matters where a patient being transferred from one medical facility to another, a patient being transferred from medical facility to home, a patient being transferred from home to another remote location, or any other instances where the DOCE or Chief Flight Nurse shall deem a patient to be "stable" when coordinating the arrangements for any medical mission. In such instances, the DOCE or Chief Flight Nurse shall ensure such documentation is made of the patients reason for transfer, vital signs, chief complaint, the level of care expected to be given (BLS, ALS, Specialty Care, or Acute Care), and patient age. This information should be documented into SalesForce.com, under the appropriate Opportunity. A follow-up email should be under the Task / Event Section, in order to notify such Medical Director.

Requirements::

This DOCE position will require extensive education and experience that shall remain in accordance with the physical and mental demands of such position.

  • RN, BSN, (Preferably MSN or Graduate Level Course in Nursing or higher level of education)
  • ACLS
  • PALS
  • CPR (Basic Life Support)
  • ACLS – Instructor
  • PALS – Instructor
  • CPR – Instructor
  • ATLS or TNATC
  • CEN
  • CFRN
  • Maintain and demonstrate proficiencies in infection control matters, stress recognition and management, altitude physiology / stressors of flight, appropriate utilization of medical / air / ground interfacility services, OSHA requirements, HIPAA requirements, EMTALA requisites, Anti-Kickback and Stark Laws, OIG Compliance, Federal Civil Statutes (including the False Claims Act), emergency medical services, hazardous material recognition and response, and an overview of FAA FAR Part 135 operations, rules, and regulations.
  • Have the abilities to perform all basic requirements of the Critical Care Flight Nurse
